Hays Soccer Club U8 Girls Bring Home Trophy from Wichita

The U8 Hays Havoc Girls Soccer Team played in their final tournament of the season on Nov. 5th and 6th inWichita.

Game 1 was going our way after the 1st half of play as we found ourselves up 1-0. We had outplayed our
opponent, Sporting Wichita, pretty handily thanks to a goal from forward Brynlee Bauck and shutout
goalkeeping from Nyx Kaiser. The girls chased the ball quite a bit in that first half and it would turn out
to be the difference in the game. When they came out to start the 2nd half, you could tell they were
pretty tired. Sporting Wichita quickly got on the board just a few minutes in to tie the game at 1-1. They
would find the back of the net two more times and win the game by a final of 3-1. Goalkeeper Nyx
Kaiser stopped 11 of the 14 shots she faced. She did an incredible job of keeping us within striking
distance. Their passing was a big reason why they had success against us. I knew the girls hadn’t played
their best game and yet were right there to try and win almost the entire game.

Game 2 was a lot better for us as we stormed out to a big lead in the first 10 minutes of the game. Two
goals by Bauck and one by Getse Cabrera-Ramirez and we found ourselves up 3-0 in a hurry. But the
Wichita Warriors would not go away easily as they were able to get two goals of their own before
halftime to cut the lead to 3-2. It was a defensive battle in the 2 nd half, which we welcome as our
defense has been very good all season. Only a few opportunities for both teams scoring wise, all of
which were unsuccessful, led to a 3-2 Havoc victory. We had done what we needed to do to put
ourselves in position to play for a championship on Sunday.

Game 3, Sunday morning, and it was simple…win and we’re in. We knew this game was going to be a
challenge as the team we were playing, the Wichita Elite, didn’t have anything to lose. Their tournament
was over regardless of whether they won or lost. The game started out how we wanted with Bauck
finding an early goal in which she took the corner kick, followed the kick towards the goal, and
ultimately ended up taking it away from a Wichita Elite player in front of their goal and scoring it.
Defender Kersee Wince had the game of her life. She was flying around the field making sure she did
everything to help her goalie out, all while handling all of the throw-ins. Wichita Elite would counter
with a goal of their own, but forward/defender Aly Cabrera-Ramirez would streak down the field with
great footwork to score an impressive goal of her own as the Havoc would take a 2-1 lead. Then, with
about 30 seconds remaining in the match, the Elite were able to get down the field and put the game-
tying goal in the top-right corner of the net. The game would end in a 2-2 tie.

Now, in previous tournaments, the dreaded tie has come back to bite us and keep us out of a
championship appearance. Fortunately, we could still make it depending on what happened in the game
following ours. What felt like five hours went by as we kept checking to see if they’d posted the results.
Finally, we got confirmation…we were playing for a championship!

We would get another chance at Sporting Wichita, who defeated us 3-1 in the first matchup. The girls
came out with good energy but could never really find their footing in the contest. Sporting Wichita did
a phenomenal job of passing the ball and taking advantage of the opportunities they had. They
controlled the game throughout, scoring two goals in each half and ultimately winning 4-0.

This was definitely a bittersweet ending. I was thrilled that the girls had made it to a title game,
especially where the tie didn’t hurt us. But I know they wanted to have a better outcome at the same time. That game didn’t go how we wanted it to, but to have them start the season 0-3 in Wichita and
end with a 2nd place finish in the same place was special. The girls learned and improved with each
practice and each game throughout the season. Our defenders and our goalkeeping were outstanding
almost every game this season. It was a big reason why we had a chance every game. Looking forward to
what they can continue to accomplish. I’m very proud of each and every player. I’m confident this was
just the beginning. #wreakhavoc
